Brand Positioning
Brand positioning is the one space a brand owns that no competitor can claim, and the reason you'd choose it over every other option in the category.
What is brand positioning?
Brand positioning is the act of defining a brand's place in the world. It's the singular point of view that allows a product, place or service to stand out from the competition and take up a specific space in people's minds.
By reverse-engineering how a consumer feels about a brand and what they associate with it, brand positioning sets the direction for every decision that follows, from wider strategy through to creative.
Without a strong position, a brand competes on baseline alone: price, features, or simply whoever shouts the loudest that week. With one, a brand has a deeper, more distinctive reason to be chosen over all others.
How brand positioning gets built
Audit the category
Map the ground that every competitor has already covered.
Find the unclaimed space
Pinpoint the one angle, occasion, or audience that nobody has thought to own yet.
Stake your claim
Write a positioning statement so specific that it wouldn't make sense with any other name attached to it.
Translate it into brand codes
Connect your position with distinctive feelings, images, or behaviours that stick in people's heads.
Let it lead your brand expression
Make every creative decision from this position to ensure your brand stays in the space it carved out.
How brand positioning works in practice: Snooz
Snooz is what a genuine white-space position looks like. The insight couldn't have been clearer: most ice cream gets eaten after 6pm, yet every brand in the category still talks like it's midday at the beach. Nobody had claimed the night.

Snooz
If there's any ice cream brand destined to own the after dark hours, it's Snooz. Replacing sugar and e-numbers with sleep-friendly ingredients like camomile and theanine, they're the sweet treat that helps you turn off the lights.
We built the position first ('the world's dreamiest ice cream') and let every creative choice follow it. All of the category's daytime codes had to go, leaving room for a night-sky screensaver aesthetic, double eclipsed moon wordmark, and zero-gravity motion.
Outcome: A challenger position that nobody could replicate, in an otherwise crowded ice cream category with little distinction beyond flavour and price.
